Pelwatte and Sevanagala Sugar Factories come under Minister’s inspection

Minister of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development, Sunil Handunnetti, inspected the Pelwatte and Sevanagala Sugar Factories belonging to the Lanka Sugar Company recently.

The Minister also looked into the promotion of eco-tourism by utilizing the existing tourist bungalows in these factories. He also said they need to explore the possibility of introducing a low-cost, high-quality alcohol to the market that can be produced using ethanol, the main by-product of sugar produced by the Lanka Sugar Company, as a solution to minimize the illegal use of alcohol in Sri Lanka and the production of organic fertiliser and organic sugar targeting the export market.

Furthermore, discussions were held with Lanka Sugar Company employees, trade union representatives and farmers’ association representatives during this observation tour to establish a systematic distribution network for the distribution of sugar production, to prepare performance indicators to increase the productivity of employees, to promptly resolve the insurance issue of employees that has been a problem of the Lanka Sugar Company for some time, and to take urgent steps in collaboration with the Ministry of Irrigation to renovate canals to minimize the difficulties faced by farmers in obtaining water.

Deputy Minister of Plantation Industries R. M. Jayawardena, Member of Parliament Ajith Agalakada, Member of Parliament Ruwan Wijeweera, and Chairman of the Lanka Sugar Company Rukshan Gunathilaka also participated in this observation tour. (MFJ)
