A special police investigation has been launched to determine whether there has been any misuse of the Presidential Fund.
Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya has instructed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to carry out the inquiry, Mawbima newspaper reported.
The investigation follows a complaint submitted to Police Headquarters, requesting an inquiry into individuals accused of misusing the Presidential Fund.
During a recent parliamentary session, it was revealed that 34 former Members of Parliament received millions of rupees from the Presidential Fund between 2005 and 2024, for purposes outside its primary objectives.
The misuse was estimated to exceed Rs. 12.25 billion. (Islandnews)
