Probe sought into fake image of President on Facebook

The Government Information Department has requested the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) to conduct a probe into a Facebook account that had shared a picture claiming President Anura Kumara Dissanayake had attended the funeral of drug kingpin ‘Makandure Madush’.  

In a letter addressed to the Acting IGP, the Government Information Department said that the picture had been circulated on Facebook by an individual identified as Tharanga Lakmal. 

The Government Information Department further pointed out that the individual had shared false information, causing an uproar on social media. 

The Acting IGP has been requested to conduct a probe into the matter and take the necessary legal actions in this regard. (Islandnews)
