Road accidents claim 12,140 lives in 5 years


 

Sri Lanka Police data reveal that 12,140 people have died in road accidents across the country over the past five years. The findings come from a study led by Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya and overseen by Deputy Inspector General of Police H.A.K.A. Indika Hapugoda, Director of Traffic Control and Road Safety.

The study analyzed road accidents from 2020 to 2024, highlighting the continued toll on lives. Further details about the causes and trends were not immediately available.

Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution on the roads and emphasized the need for adherence to traffic laws to reduce fatalities.
