Rs. 17.8M worth of narcotics seized at Central Mail Exchange

Officers of the Postal Valuation Division of Sri Lanka Customs have found parcels containing narcotics, valued at Rs. 17.8 million, that had remained unclaimed at the Central Mail Exchange in the last two weeks.

It is reported that the parcels arrived at the Central Mail Exchange from France, the US, Canada and the Netherlands to addresses in Kandy, Negombo, Ja-Ela, Wellawatte, Nugegoda, Tangalle, Mahiyanganaya, and Jaffna.

Around 20 such parcels had arrived in the last two weeks and as they were unclaimed, the Postmaster General’s permission had been received on 19 March to inspect the parcels.

During the inspection, officials found 272 grams of Kush cannabis in 14 parcels and 2,049 Methamphetamine tablets.

The narcotics were handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau for investigations after the drugs were identified and certified by officers of the Customs Narcotics Control Division. (Islandnews)
