Samarakoon glitters with Gold, Silver in Budapest

Sri Lanka’s breaststroke national record holder, Ramudi Samarakoon, has once again proven her excellence at the 2024-2025 Hungarian University and College National Long Course Swimming Championship.

Training and studying in Budapest under the FINA Scholarship, Samarakoon secured both a gold and silver medal at the national event.

The 22-year-old won the gold in the 10x50m Mixed Freestyle Relay and earned silver in the women’s 100m Breaststroke final. She also placed fourth in the 50m Breaststroke.

Representing Killer Whale Aquatics (KWA) and Visakha Vidyalaya, Samarakoon has stamped her name in Sri Lanka’s swimming history, holding five long course national records. These include three individual national records in the 50m, 100m, and 200m Breaststroke, along with two relay records in the 4x50m Freestyle and 4x50m Medley relays.

Last year, Samarakoon broke her own 100m Breaststroke national record with a time of 1:13.87 at the 2024 Long Course National Championship. She also set new national records in the 50m Breaststroke (33.91) and 200m Breaststroke (2:41.66) in 2023 edition.

With 654 FINA points for the 100m Breaststroke, Samarakoon ranks as Sri Lanka’s second highest swimmer in FINA points. She is included in the 22-member national swimming squad picked by Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union recently.
