The Air Force announced that it has initiated an investigation into the origin and purpose of a drone aircraft that was discovered floating in the sea off the coast of Trincomalee.
According to officials, the drone was retrieved by a group of fishermen who found it adrift and brought it ashore.
Preliminary findings suggest that the drone is a foreign-manufactured target drone. It is suspected that Anadrone Systems manufactured the drone. Air Force Media Spokesperson Group Captain Eranda Geeganage stated that such drones are typically used during military training exercises to simulate aerial attacks on aircraft.
The spokesperson further noted that a similar target drone was reported to have arrived in Sri Lanka several years ago from the Indian state of Odisha. Investigations are ongoing.
