Sri Lanka’s tennis stars took control of the court on the opening rounds of the ITF Asia 14&U Development Championships – Week 2, held at the SLTA Courts in Colombo yesterday.
In the boys’ first round, Damsath Peiris set the tone with a flawless 6-0, 6-0 win over Kaairl Sabrin Hasiq of Brunei. His compatriot Yudheerya Atapaththu followed suit with an equally decisive 6-0, 6-1 victory against Nepal’s Dauakoti Bishwo. Meanwhile, Pravesh Sivapalan overcame Mongolia’s Battushig Khangari with a confident 6-0, 6-1 performance.
The girls’ second round saw a similar display of Sri Lankan supremacy. Annaya Norbet outclassed the Philippines’ Torre Campo Maristela with a convincing 6-1, 6-1 victory. Sahansa Damsilunni triumphed over another Philippine challenger, Paglalunan Ella, in a well-fought 6-4, 6-2 match. Completing the sweep, Eliza Kahagalla overwhelmed Mongolia’s Gantur Anujin with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 scoreline.
The Week 2 round of the tournament, which began on January 19, will run until January 23, bringing together top seeded players from South Asia, Southeast Asia, and East Asia.
