The manager of the Kekirawa branch of a prominent insurance company has been arrested and remanded over the recent death of renowned Sri Lankan Tusker ‘Deegadanthu 1’.
Last week, the tusker, known to frequent the Kala Wewa and the Kahalla-Pallakelle reserves, was reported to have died after being electrocuted due to coming into contact with an illegal electric fence.Â
A resident of Galkiriyagama was arrested by officers of the Galkiriyagama Wildlife Office on suspicion and produced in court.
The Kekirawa Acting Magistrate ordered the suspect to be remanded until 12 December over the incident.Â
The wildlife official informed the court that they were able to recover the unauthorized electrical wiring, car battery and electrical circuit used for the fence.Â
Stating that a comprehensive investigation was required to be conducted into the incident, the wildlife officials requested the court to remand the suspect. (Islandnews)
