The third day of the 2024 All Island Schools Athletics Championship took place yesterday, at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo.
A significant feature of the third day was the breaking of several event records, to add to the ones broken within the previous two days of competition.
Firstly, Wenappuwa St. Joseph Vaz College’s Vimantha Rajakaruna, who competed in the Under-18 Boys’ 200 meters event, set a new event record by finishing the race in 21.42 seconds.
Consequently, the Under-16 Boys’ 4×400 meters relay team from Wenappuwa St. Joseph Vaz College set another event record with a time of 3 minutes 25.53 seconds, displaying the athletics prowess of this school.
Meanwhile, Tharani Nirmana of Gampaha Sirikurusa College, who set a new record in the Under-16 Girls’ 100 meters event yesterday (19th), completed the 200 meters in a similar fashion; setting another event record today by completing the event in 25.41 seconds.
Additionally, Wattala Lyceum College set two more event records by finishing the Under-18 Girls’ 4×100 meters relay in 49.03 seconds and the Under-20 Girls’ 4×400 meters relay in 3 minutes 53.35 seconds.
Competition Results to Date:
With today’s events concluding, the fourth day of the championship will take place today, the 21st of October, with several more events to take place.
Among the scheduled events are the 800 meters in various age groups, as well as the 110, 100, and 80 meters hurdles. Only time will tell what this day holds, but an exciting course of events and results can be anticipated.
