The Telecommunication Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) yesterday said that mobile phones and communication devices which have not been registered with the Commission will be banned in Sri Lanka.
Commission Director General retired Air Vice Marshal Bandula Herath said that the decision was taken to thwart smuggling of communication equipment including mobile phones to the country illegally. He said that the TRCSL has planned to introduce an automated system by end of January in this regard.
“It is the responsibility of the Commission to prevent the sale of such equipment to consumers as the people have to face inconvenience by purchasing the non-standard and non-compliant communication equipment.
However the Director General said mobile phones being used in the country and the mobile phones used by the foreigners arriving in the country won’t be affected by this programme
