Speaker Asoka Sapumal Ranwala will issue a statement in a few days regarding concerns raised over his academic qualifications, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said.
Minister Jayatissa assured the media today that the matter will be addressed by the Speaker soon.
Stating that action will be initiated in this regard based on the outcome, the minister added that necessary action will be taken if the claims are true, as well as if they are false.
Addressing the Post-Cabinet media briefing today, Minister Jayatissa warned that false accusations were also a serious issue.
He made the remarks after questions were raised on Speaker Asoka Sapumal Ranwala’s academic qualifications which are under scrutiny after the Sri Lanka Parliament website’s members’ directory removed the title “Dr.” from his profile.
The controversy arose when social media activists questioned Ranwala’s credentials on Facebook, sparking public calls for accountability. Former Election Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya also challenged Ranwala to prove his qualifications or step down.
Ranwala’s LinkedIn profile and Wikipedia page, which previously mentioned a PhD in Biochemistry from Japan’s Waseda University, were recently altered to omit the doctorate. His LinkedIn profile also listed a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Moratuwa and a directorial role at the BioGenic Green Technology Research Institute. (Islandnews)
