Minister Nalinda Jayathissa said that there was no need to send a letter to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa requesting him to vacate his Wijerama residence.
“There is no need for us to send a letter. Perhaps the people can send him letters asking him to vacate the house,” the Minister said.
He made these remarks in response to questions from journalists about why the government had not formally communicated its stance to the former President in writing.
The comments come after a recent statement by Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam, who said that Mahinda Rajapaksa was willing to vacate his official residence if the government officially requested him to do so.
Referring to the court ruling on former President Maithripala Sirisena’s residence, the Cabinet Spokesperson noted that Rajapaksa, as a lawyer, should be able to understand the situation. “If his brother, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, could vacate his residence without a letter, why would he wait for one?” the Minister questioned.
Jayathissa added that the government is also considering an alternative residence suitable for the former President and his spouse. (Islandnews)
