The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) will decide today whether further power cuts will be necessary, CEB Chairman Dr. Tilak Siyambalapitiya said. The decision is expected to be announced this morning.
A sudden outage last Sunday caused all three generators at the Norochcholai Power Plant to go offline, prompting the CEB to impose one-and-a-half-hour power cuts across all regions on Feb. 10 and 11. These cuts were implemented in four groups within a six-hour window from 3:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
However, with reduced electricity demand on Poya Day yesterday, the CEB was able to maintain supply without interruptions.
The generators at Norochcholai remain inactive as maintenance work continues. The CEB said efforts are underway to restore them, with a high likelihood of reconnecting the plant to the national grid by tomorrow. (NewsWire)
