Tomiko Itooka, recognized by Britain’s Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest person in September last year, has died in western Japan, health ministry and other officials said Saturday. She was 116.
Itooka died of old age at 9:03 p.m. Sunday in a nursing home for the elderly in the city of Ashiya, Hyogo Prefecture, according to the ministry and city officials.
Tomiko Itooka became the oldest person in the world after Spain’s Maria Branyas Morera passed away in August 2024 at age 117.
